THE ASSOCIATION

What happens when concentrated cyber security knowledge meets long-standing expertise, comprehensive know-how, and high-end technology? The result is an innovative IT security cluster in which business, politics, and research optimally combine their unique competencies. 

The Cyber Security Cluster Bonn was founded on October 4, 2018 in Bonn. The association is composed of three bodies:

The Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics FKIE develops technologies and processes with the aim of early detection, mitigation and management of existential risks. In close cooperation with strategic partners, the institute is dedicated to the entire processing chain of data and information: from acquisition, transmission and processing to reliable protection. The Fraunhofer FKIE is committed to this mission both in the civilian sector and in command and reconnaissance processes in the defence technology sector. With a broad competence and excellent attention to detail, the Fraunhofer FKIE takes on the latest scientific-technological challenges in security related issues.

Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS), University of Applied Sciences

The Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS), University of Applied Sciences, was founded in 1995. It is a dynamic and research-driven university with almost 10,000 students and approximately 1.000 employees including 150 professors. The university is located in the heart of the liveable Rhineland region, with campuses in Hennef, Rheinbach and Sankt Augustin. H-BRS’ department of Computer Science is one of the largest at a University of Applied Sciences in Germany. Moreover, H-BRS runs two computer science and cybersecurity labs: the b-it (Bonn-Aachen International Centre for Information Technology) jointly with the University of Bonn, RWTH Aachen and Fraunhofer Society as well as the Learning Lab Cybersecurity with the Fraunhofer FKIE.

Skymatic

Skymatic is specialized on data security, privacy protection, and the sensible design of digitization. The company is known for the development of Cryptomator, an encryption software that allows businesses to protect their cloud data from spying eyes. The easy-to-use software received the CeBIT Innovation Award in 2016 for its user-friendliness and high-end security. 
Skymatic also develops individualized online vaults for corporations on the basis of Cryptomator technology. With the introduction of features such as key and user management and access logging, Cryptomator now becomes also available for SMEs.
